Notes from Buddhist Meditation Retreat
Notes from Margaret's Buddhist retreat:
- every moment has the potential to make the next moment better
- when we encounter something negative we accept it let go of the agitation but don’t ignore it or sweep it under the rug
- everyone including and especially annoying people are our greatest teachers - teaches us patience
- every difficult situation teaches us understanding
- when we suffer think of others it will put our suffering in perspective
- be conscious of our everyday blessings, blessings deprived to others
- develop a compassionate mind and have a ‘wish to help’
- We may suffer because of our desires, our attachments - attachment is when we think that our source of happiness is out there - someone or something is responsible for our happiness or unhappiness. Attachment is looking at another person or a particular outcome as our source of happiness.
-Some suffering comes from when:
we don’t get what we want
we get what we don’t want
even when we get what we want we are not satisfied, it is never enough
- We are one cell in the body of life. We can’t succeed without all the others. The actions of others are beneficial to me. Harmony comes from what you bring into the relationship or situation, not from what others do or don’t do. A mind of love is always wishing for someone else to be happy.
- We are not our stress or anxiety. They are thoughts and ways of thinking therefore I can change my thoughts to new ways of thinking.
- Meditation teaches us:
how to be in the moment not in the past or future
to let go of undesired attachment, unattainable desires
we have a precious human life
each moment we are changing, each moment we can create
I have exactly what I need right now to do so
every single moment of our human life can have great meaning, is worthwhile
the way we think produces suffering or happiness
contemplating our mortality can bring us into the moment
